Northwest Georgia Crescent Leadership Alliance
"Developing Emerging Student Leaders"
The Northwest Crescent Leadership Alliance was formed in 2002 by the presidents of six founding colleges and universities for the purpose of identifying and developing emerging student leaders. The program emphasizes the development of ethical, servant leaders. To this end, successful applicants will be expected to participate in all program sessions, as well as work in groups of their choosing to develop a leadership related project that serves either their institution or the community.

2007-2008 NWCLA Shorter College
The Northwest Leadership Alliance is a very selective student leadership development program open to freshman, sophomores, and juniors of member institutions. The process targets six emerging student leaders from each participating college that demonstrate the potential to become leaders through on-campus and/or off-campus leadership and volunteer activities.
Successful applicants will be presented the opportunity to participate in a year long program during the 2007-2008 academic year that will focus on developing:
- Character - knowing and developing the self
- Ethics - applying ethical decision making
- Leadership - transactional and servant
2008-2009 NWCLA applications available in the Office of Student Activities.
The Hill Climbers Freshman Leadership Program
The Hill Climbers program is designed to offer first-year students a unique opportunity to develop their leadership potential through a semester-long experience. During the program participants meet other new students, experience personal growth, build relationships, and participate in a unique community of student leaders. Participants learn more about involvement at Shorter College and prepare for leadership roles in student organizations and campus departments.
Topics that have been covered include:
- icebreakers
- burnout
- motivation
- team building
- recognition
- running a meeting
- event planning
- group decision making
- conflict resolution
- personality preferences
- leadership styles
The program is designed to develop leaders on campus who are interested in making a difference in the Shorter College community. Hill Climbers alums have gone on to have very successful and fulfilling experiences at Shorter College and in the years after.
Some of their accomplishments include:
- Hill Climbers serve as Presidents of clubs, organizations, and fraternities/sororities.
- Hill Climbers alum elected into numerous student government and Residence Life positions.
- Hill Climbers alum have the skills and confidence to take on leadership roles across the Shorter College campus and beyond!
Students selected to participate in Hill Climbers will participate in a weekend ropes course retreat, a community service project, a class project and a series of bi-monthly leadership workshops.
Applications will be available beginning this summer, and the deadline to apply is August 27th, 2008.
Northwest Georgia Leadership Conference
This annual leadership conference is held in the fall semester at Berry College. The conference is sponsored by the Shorter College, Berry College, and Georgia Highlands College. It is a great opportunity for student leaders from colleges and universities in north Georgia and surrounding areas to come together, network, share resources, and take back new ideas and skills to their respective campuses.
