FACULTY OPPORTUNITIES
A wide range of international research and teaching opportunities is available to Shorter College faculty members. These opportunities include short-term teaching experiences in Central and South America, Europe and Asia through such programs as the Americas Program, the Asia Program and Mayterm, as well as summer programs and long-term sabbaticals for teaching and research in several countries around the world.
The East West Center
Since 2001, Shorter College faculty members have participated in summer programs of the Asian Studies Development Program (ASDP) of the East-West Center. The Center is a U.S. government-funded effort to bring greater understanding between the United States and Asian nations. ASDP offers a variety of three to four week seminars in Asia as well as at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Since 2002, Shorter College has partnered with ASDP to infuse Asian studies into the Shorter College curriculum. Applications for ASDP programs in the summer are generally submitted in mid-March. All Shorter College faculty members receive information about upcoming programs in January of each year. Interested faculty members should contact the Office of International Programs for assistance with the application process.

Shorter College Summer Programs
Each summer (generally in May and June), Shorter College faculty members may participate in four to five week teaching programs with Shorter College students in Asia, Europe and the Americas. These programs are directed by a faculty member and assisted by a second professor who teaches within the program. Faculty members generally commit to teach two classes for which they are paid according to the salary scale for summer classes. All expenses of faculty members are covered by the college.
Faculty members generally apply for these summer programs in the spring semester a full year prior to the program. A committee of faculty members select the faculty who will participate in each program based upon the caliber of the proposal and the particular program's direction. This faculty member then assists the director of the program in recruiting students and preparing students for the experience during the spring semester prior to departure.
