HUMANITIES
Outstanding skills essential in today's technological and multi-cultural society are critical thinking and proficiency in written and spoken communication, skills that are the core of the Department of Humanities. Beyond this, the study of humanities expands consciousness and deepens awareness of both our cultural heritage and contemporary society. Careful thinking and critical reading can also strengthen tolerance and appreciation of cultures besides our own.
The study of English focuses upon writing, research, and critical thinking in courses ranging from basic composition to a study of literature reaching back to the Hebrews and forward to contemporary writers. The study involves in-depth analysis of changing social and political aspects as well as emotional and spiritual concerns of people from around the world. With this enhanced awareness, together with the knowledge-based background the discipline offers, students can look forward with confidence to finding a successful place in the world outside college.
Both Spanish and French majors gain not only a deepened awareness of the culture of the target language but also intensive study to increase skills in spoken and written communication. Courses range from beginning and intermediate skills courses to a wide range of advanced courses in composition and literature. A state-of-the-art language laboratory enables students to enhance listening comprehension skills. These methods of language study help to prepare students for a variety of careers in our ever-changing world.
