Guest Art Exhibit - “Two Views Through Abstraction” An intuitive, self-taught visionary artist, Harbour forgoes brushes and uses her hands to apply paint. Her work is sensory and emotional. Signature pieces involve the layering and interweaving of human figures, animals, archetypes and natural elements. Hamrick is devoted to studying human emotions, researching color theory, and paying special attention to how light interacts with color. Hamrick’s art can be found in several private art collections around the United States, as well as art galleries around the world.

Join the Shorter Chorale and guest faculty soloists as we present an evening of fun, food, and music foreshadowing our upcoming tour to Spain! Listen to beautiful Spanish guitar music by the courtyard fountain at our outdoor reception; then join us in the dining hall for paella and other delicious dishes of the region at our sumptuous buffet. The evening will conclude with a delightful presentation of Spanish folk music, tangos, and choral selections featuring the beautiful El Cant Dels Ocells (Song of the Sparrows) of Pablo Casals.

Fall Play: The Philadelphia Story Callaway Theater Thursdays-Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. Tickets Required. Call the Shorter Box Office at 706-233-7288. This classic is a sophisticated romantic comedy set in Philadelphia in the early 1940’s. The play was later made into a successful film starring Cary Grant, Kathryn Hepburn and Jimmy Stewart.
As an international leading soprano, Cecily Nall has performed in the most prestigious opera houses in the United States and Europe. She first attracted attention as a winner of the Metropolitan Opera and the Baltimore Opera and began her professional career in the Cincinnati Opera Young American Artists Program. Shorter University Opera Theatre presents two delightful one-act operas composed 200 years apart from one another. La canterina (1766) is a jovial farce concerning the demure young maiden, Gasparina, and her singing teacher, Don Pelagio. This charming opera buffa will be performed in Italian. In La Divina (1966), a past-her-prime operatic star takes her final bow. This hilarious satire of the “diva” persona will be performed in English. Northwest Georgia Choral Festival Tickets Required. Shorter University is excited to host the 15th annual Northwest Georgia Choral Festival for high school students (grades 10-12) and elementary school students (grades 4-6) and their directors. For nearly half a century, the choral music of America has been influenced by the unforgettable arrangements of Robert Shaw and Alice Parker. The Shorter Chorale will present a variety of these magnificently crafted works featuring Wondrous Love , Hark I Hear the Harps Eternal , and I Will Arise. Student Directed Play - Angel Street Directed by senior Callie Edwards, Angel Street is a Victorian Thriller later made into the classic film Gaslight , starring Ingrid Bergman, Charles Boyer and Joseph Cotton.
Guest Art Exhibit - “Seeing is Believing” by Frank Murphy Murphy serves as a campus minister at Berry and Georgia Highlands colleges, and much of his art relates to common threads within his ministry (redemption, reconciliation, joy, faith, compassion, mercy and love). This exhibit will feature recent work of biblical stories, narrative depictions from literature, portraits of unusual holy men and the preparatory work for the commissioned Georgia Baptist Convention murals. Set in Leadville, Colorado, Moore’s The Ballad of Baby Doe (1956) retells the true story of Elizabeth “Baby Doe” Tabor and her marriage to a rich silver entrepreneur. Set over the course of several decades, the opera reveals tableaus from Baby Doe’s life: her greatest joys and deepest sorrows. Comprised of a beautiful score and recognizable arias, this American opera is a landmark work in standard repertory. Performed with full orchestra, this opera will combine the talents of Shorter University faculty and students. Glowing endorsements from leading conductors have led to appearances with major orchestras in the United States and abroad. February Guest Art Exhibit - “Homage” by Amalia Amaki Amaki, a nationally known, photo-based mixed media artist, is professor of art history at the University of Alabama. A graduate of Georgia State University, University of New Mexico and Emory University, she has work in collections of the High Museum and the National Museum for Women in the Arts. Few choral works are more beautiful than the magnificent Mass in G minor of British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. Written for double choir and soloists, this stunningly difficult piece will be the centerpiece of our upcoming performances in and around Madrid, Burgos, and Barcelona. Rounding out the program will be American folk song arrangements and spirituals, which were requested by the wonderful people of Spain during our recent preparatory visit.
