David Underwood “Squares and Other Rectangles”

Reception and Artist Lecture on September 17 @ 4:00 p.m. in Arnold Gallery

David Underwood makes composite photographs utilizing a variety of subject matter and construction techniques. Most of his recent assemblages include a mixture of color and black and white component original photographs which are stapled to archival backings. His work has appeared in more than 100 exhibitions around the country, and is included in the permanent collections of a dozen museums.

Underwood is currently the Art Department Chairperson at Carson-Newman College, in East Tennessee. David Underwood states: “My work attempts to expand the language of still photography beyond the limitations of the single-image, by exploring the various aesthetic and thematic possibilities of the composite photograph.”

New Music Concert - Jocelyn Hagen
Monday, September 14 @ 7:30 p.m. Brookes Chapel

Jocelyn Hagen will premiere two new works for voice and piano: a short song cycle for baritone and piano, and a duet for soprano and tenor. Her music is melodically driven, boldly beautiful, and intricately crafted. Ms. Hagen holds degrees in Theory, Composition, and Voice from St. Olaf College and the University of Minnesota. She has received over 30 commissions, 40 premieres, and 90 performances.

Robert Cox “Return to the Center”

Reception and Artist Lecture: October 5 @ 4:00 p.m. in Arnold Gallery

Robert Cox is currently Lecturer of Art at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He has taught Drawing, Painting, Color Theory and Design at various schools including the University of Alabama and Young Harris College in Georgia. The artist employs a variety of materials including: oil on canvas; acrylic on canvas and paper; graphite on film; and charcoal and conte on paper.

Robert Cox

His work has been exhibited in over 90 regional and national exhibitions of art, including 10 one-person exhibitions. Robert Cox states: " This visual work reflects the biological richness of the Southern Appalachia region. Created primarily from direct observation, the work represents literally thousands of miles hiked and canoed in the remaining old-growth forests, swamps, rivers and mountains of the South."

It is 1985 and Robbie Hart is a wannabe rock star and New Jersey’s favorite wedding singer. Stood up at the altar, he sets out to make every wedding as disastrous as his own. The Wedding Singer takes us back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up, and a wedding singer might just be the coolest guy in the room.

Northwest Georgia Choral Festival*

Shorter College is excited to host the 14th Annual Northwest Georgia Choral festival for high school students (grades 10-12) and elementary school students (grades 4-6) and their directors. The public is invited to attend the final concert featuring the festival choirs and the Shorter Chorale.

This is a fantastical adventure of a little girl’s search for home. Iris lives on the island of Nocturno where memories are kept in their coats - not in their mind. Rulers of the island take Iris away to be their daughter and remove her PastCoat, leaving her with no memories of her past.

This Christmas, the Shorter Chorale and Shorter Chorus are thrilled to be combining forces with the Rome Symphony Orchestra to present the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah under the direction of Dr. Martha Shaw. Soloists will be members of the Shorter College voice faculty. The Rome Symphony will complete the program with holiday favorites conducted by Dr. Richard Prior, RSO conductor. You won’t want to miss this exciting event.

Reception and Artist Lecture: January 19 @ 4:00 p.m. in Arnold Gallery

Artist, writer, and retired educator, Margaret Ingram grew up in the Southeast and has resided in Rome, Georgia since 1970. She holds degrees in Art Education and School Counseling, and has taught art in Floyd County Schools for twenty years and part-time at Shorter College as an adjunct instructor. Her media of choice in the visual arts are watercolor, graphite pencil and screen-printing.

Swamp Lily by Margaret Ingram

She actively supports fine arts organizations and events in Rome and surrounding area.Margaret Ingram States : “The Images shown in this exhibit make a visual statement about the creative journey traveled by the artist. The voyage includes trips through flower gardens, meadows, trickling streams and mountain tops. The artworks are metaphors that provide a look into the imaginary and spiritual world experienced by the artist.”

 Winter Opera*
The Merry Widow - An Operetta by Franz Lehar
with R.O.M.E. and the Chamber Players of the South
January 22-23, 2010 @ 7:30 p.m. at the Rome City Auditorium, Rome

Hanna Glawari, the “merry widow,” tried to find love again in this story of romantic intrigue set at the Parisian embassy in the imaginary country Pontevedro. Filled with lilting waltzes and dancing grisettes, this well-loved Vienesse operetta features the famous Vilja Lied.

Solo and duet repertoire will include works from classics as well as the world premiere of a new song cycle by composer Nicole DiPaolo. The song cycle features the texts of Dr. Kunkle’s ancestor Alex Posey, a Native American poet. Read more about Kirsten Kunkle>

Micah Cain lives and works in the mountains of Western North Carolina, and is a resident artist at the EnergyXchange. He makes wheel thrown and hand-built sculptural forms. The beauty of the mountainous landscape and its rich community of contemporary artists serve as great inspiration for him.

Strange Fruit is meant to present an audience with a collection of abstracted flora. Various forms will be displayed to highlight the subtleties of the organic environment. No object is meant to be a literal representation of an actual fruit, plant, etc. Micah Cain states: “My intent is to merely evoke a sense of the organic through familiar form, exaggerated color, and bizarre texture”.

First performed around 1594, Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays. It is a tragedy about two young lovers whose untimely deaths ultimately unite their feuding families.

Mr. Phillip Dothard, baritone

Mr. Dothard is a recent alumnus of the Ryan Opera Center of the Lyric Opera of Chicago. While there he sang roles in Roméo et Juliette, Dialogues des Carmélites, La Traviata, Die Frau ohne Schatten and the title role in Rossini’s ll barbiere di Siviglia. He was recently seen in Britten’s Beggar’s Opera with Dupage Opera Theatre.

Mr. Dothard is a former Shorter College voice student of Dr. John Ramsaur and a native of Cartersville, Georgia.

Shorter Chamber Orchestra and Wind Ensemble Concert
Friday, April 9, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. in Brookes Chapel

On April 9 th at 7:30 PM in the Chapel, the Shorter College Chamber Orchestra and Wind Ensemble will perform for the very first time! These new ensembles have been rehearsing since January and will program such works as “Undertow” by John Mackey, “Southern Hymn” by Sam Hazo and “Japanese Lullaby” by Keiko Yamada.

The ensembles are under the direction of Dr. Andrea Strauss, and the Wind Ensemble will feature guest conductor, Mr. Stephen Turner. “We are off to an exciting start this year with the Band Program and Instrumental Music Education Degree Program,” said Dr. Strauss. “It is a privilege to work with such a wonderful group of students and supportive administration and faculty.”

The performance is open to the public, free admission.

Godspell is one of the biggest Off Broadway and Broadway successes of all time. It was groundbreaking in its unique reflection on the life of Jesus, with a message of kindness, tolerance and love. The parables of Jesus Christ come humanly to life and include well-loved songs such as Day By Day.

One of the most beautiful choral works of the twentieth century is the Requiem of Maurice Duruflé. The composer masterfully combines the traditional chant of the requiem mass with exquisite harmonies that produce a choral sound that is both ancient and modern at the same time. This orchestration will feature organist Steven Wooddell, one of the newest members of the Shorter College accompanying staff.
