These two one-act operas by Gian-Carlo Menotti highlight his gift for soaring melody and intense drama. In The Old Maid and the Thief, two busy-body society ladies find some excitement in their lives when a handsome wanderer passes through town. In the famous aria "Steal Me, Sweet Thief", their house maid Laetitia hopes that the romantic stranger will save her from a similar life of spinsterhood. In The Medium we meet Madame Flora, a faux clairvoyant whose world turns upside down when she starts really hearing the voices of ghosts. Read more about the Opera program at Shorter> Student Art Exhibit Friends of Theatre Cabaret Fundraiser* Northwest Georgia Chorale Festival Concert Shorter College is excited to host the 13th Annual Northwest Georgia Choral Festival for high school students (grades 10-12) and elementary school students (grades 4-6) and their directors. The public is invited to attend the final concert featuring the festival choirs and the Shorter Chorale. Shorter Chorus Fall Concert Shorter College is thrilled to welcome Elizabeth Robbins as the new conductor of the Shorter Chorus; she will be joining the faculty this fall as a director of music education. Dr. Robbins brings a wonderful reputation as a high school and collegiate choral director to the Shorter campus, and we eagerly anticipate her debut! Faculty Recital Second Annual Shorter Dance Revue* Shorter Chorale Fall Concert The Shorter Chorale will begin its 41st year with a wonderful concert featuring sacred choral works of the 20th century. Messiaen's O Sacrum Convivium, Te Deum in C of Benjamin Britten, and Stravinsky's Pater Noster will be programmed, along with other significant choral compositions of this period. Prepatory Department Fall Recital The Preparatory Department in the Arts offers lessons in piano, voice, Kindermusick and more. December Shorter Chorale, Shorter Chorus and the Rome Symphony Orchestra present Advance tickets: $15 for adults; $10 for senior adults; and $3 for students The Choral Department of Shorter College presents the highlight of the Christmas season featuring the Shorter Chorale, the Shorter Chorus and the Rome Symphony Orchestra in a thrilling concert of holiday music. The performance will feature the Gloria! of John Rutter. The Rome Symphony Orchestra will also perform music of the season. Choral favorites, audience sing-a-longs, and a festive holiday atmosphere will start your Christmas season with a flourish! January 2009 Massenet's Cinderella* See the beloved fairy tale come to life in Jules Massenet's operatic rendering. Based on Charles Perrault's version of the classic story, the opera is filled with the charming sweetness of dancing fairies, the evil humor of conniving step-sisters, and the magic of a dream-like ball and happy ending. Come and see Cinderella find her Prince Charming as depicted in Massenet's lush and romantic score.
Faculty Recital Faculty Recital Thoroughly Modern Millie* $12 for general admission; $8 for students and senior adults Thoroughly Modern Millie is a high-spirited musical romp that took Broadway by storm! Taking place in New York City in 1922, Thoroughly Modern Mille tells the story of young Millie Dillmount, who has just moved to the city in search of a new life for herself. It's a New York full of intrigue and jazz - a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever. Based on the popular movie, the stage version of Thoroughly Modern Millie includes a full score of new songs and bright dance numbers.
Steve Loucks is a professor of art at Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Alabama, and a professional potter. His work plays upon functional pottery forms that abandon utility for a more playful, organic, and sculptural approach to form, surface embellishment, and presentation. His works have multiple layers of glazes that are high-fired in a reduction atmosphere. Steve received his MFA from the New York City College of Ceramics at Alfred University, and his BFA from the University of Illinois. MARCH
Art Student Honors Exhibition March 30 - April 10, 2009 Reception during Celebrate Shorter Day Arnold Gallery APRIL Shorter Chorus Spring Concert with "Somethin' Else"* The Shorter Chorus will conclude its choral season with a delightful blend of choral works of many periods and styles. This ensemble is under the direction of Elizabeth Robbins. Come join the Chorus for an evening of choral classics. William D. Knight Competition Finals* $12 for general admission; $8 for students and senior adults The eighth annual Knight Performer's Scholarship Competition honors the outstanding contributions of William and Mary Ann Knight. Mr. Knight is retired distinguished professor of piano (1963-2004), and Mrs. Knight is in her 43rd year of teaching piano at Shorter. During Mr. Knight's 55-year concert career, he performed throughout the United States and Central America. During his 42 years at Shorter College, his students were awarded prizes at state, national, and international piano competitions. The Picture of Dorian Gray* $12 for general admission; $8 for students and senior adults The author of Look Back in Anger, Inadmissible Evidence and The Entertainer has created a brilliant dramatization of this classic about a man who retains his youth while the decay of advancing years and moral corruption appears on a portrait painted by one of his companions. "Osborne has done much more than a scissors and paste job on Wilde's famous story. He has...created a sense of evil through implication" - Guardian.
