June 12, 2013 - Recent high school graduates were awarded the Shorter University’s Alfred Shorter Scholarship. They will begin classes at Shorter in August 2013.
The Alfred Shorter Scholarship provides three-quarters of tuition for eight semesters (for incoming freshmen), excluding summers. To qualify for this scholarship, a student must hold at least a 3.75 grade point average and an 1100 SAT (Critical Reading & Math) or 24 ACT score. Scholarships recipients must then maintain a 3.00 cumulative grade point average at Shorter.
Sierra Renee Anderson is the daughter of Shannon and Dena Anderson of Riddleville, Ga. Sierra graduated from Brentwood High School where she was an Honor Graduate; a member of the Senior Beta Club, National Honor Society, Anchor Club, and Brentwood Relay for Life team. She received first place in Washington County for the Farm Bureau Drawing contest and third place in the girl’s solo at region literary competition. She volunteered for Brentwood Community Service Day. Sierra is also a member of S.K.I.P (Special Kids in the Park) and assisted with a golf tournament fundraiser for New Beginning in Christ, a drug and alcohol rehab center.
Amy Victoria Barraclough Cooper is the daughter of Joy Walker of Temple, Ga. Amy recently graduated from Paulding County High School. She is involved with her home church Bethany Christian Church.
Lora Ashlee Bruce is the daughter of Mike and Becky Bruce of Hoschton, Ga. Lora graduated from Mill Creek High School, where she was a scholar athlete, honor graduate, and a member of FCA and the Spanish National Honors Society. She volunteered at Top Soccer and is a member of The Vine youth group.
Hannah Coffey is the daughter of Michael and Lesley Coffey of Ringgold, Ga. Hannah recently graduated from Northwest High School, where she was a member of FCCLA, serving as vice president of programs, placed first in the State in Knowledge Bowl, and placed first in the State for the Statesman Award for two consecutive years. A high honor graduate, she also received various band awards, was band section leader and is a Fellowship Baptist Church student leader.
Daniel Paul Farias is the son of Bert and Carolyn Farias of Windham, N.H. He recently graduated from Windham High School, where he participated in the National Honor Society. He also received the Renaissance Award.
Erin Serena Gould is the daughter of Tom and Tammy Gould of Newnan, Ga. Erin graduated from East Coweta High School where she maintained a 4.0 GPA. She participated in and was the Vice President of Followers of Christ in her senior year. She was awarded the Mike Fitzpatrick Student Athlete of the Month award as well as the Scholar Athlete Award. Erin is also very much involved in numerous church activities that include teaching, singing and acting.
Ahzureé Janelle Herbert is the daughter of James and Betty Herbert of Thomasville, Ga. She recently graduated from Thomasville City Scholars Academy, where she was an AP scholar and competed in Science Olympiad and debate team. She was the founder of “Today, Not Tomorrow” community service group. She is also a church member of Providence M.B. Church and Usher tutor, BTU congress, Bible Brain Bowl and a volunteer for “Feed the Hungry.” She is a Delta Sigma Theta Debutante, received the Better Business Bureau Scholarship for essay on ethics, was a messenger at GUNA (Georgia United Nations Assembly), and served as prosecuting attorney in a Mock Trial Competition.
Lauren Rebecca Kelley is the daughter of Michael and Becky Kelley of Rome, Ga. Lauren graduated from Coosa High School, where she was Coosa High School High Honor graduate, received the outstanding academic achievement award, and was nominated for the Rome and Floyd Sports Hall of Fame, as well as being named a Rome News Tribune All Area soccer player and Miss Eagle. She was also recognized for excellence in AP English and AP US History. She was a member of FCA, National Honor Society, Junior Optimist Club, and Varsity Soccer team.
Crystal Marshall is the daughter of Seth and Tracy Marshall of Ramsey, Minn. Crystal recently graduated from Anoka High School, where she was a four-year varsity letter in hockey and lacrosse. She was lacrosse captain for 2 years. In 2012 she was awarded All Conference in lacrosse; in 2011 she was also named honorable mention All-Conference. Crystal was involved in numerous activities. She lettered in Spanish club, STAR, and DECA and was a two-year letter for HOSA where she was the 2013 Vice President. She is a Sunday School teacher and Vacation Bible School teacher.
Laura Michelle Martin is the daughter of Bil and Traci Martin of Woodstock, Ga. She recently graduated from Living Science Home Studies. Laura was a senior leader on the leadership team and led the school’s science team. She served as a teaching assistant and performed with the dance team. She is a middle school Sunday School teacher at her home church, First Baptist Church Woodstock. She is also a volunteer at Northside Cherokee Hospital.
Emily Mays is the daughter of Mike and Kim Mays of Dalton, Ga. She recently graduated from Southeast High School. Emily maintained a 4.0 GPA while at Southeast. She was also involved in cheerleading; in 2012 she was the cheerleading captain, was awarded with the cheerleading leadership award, and had the highest GPA on the team. Emily also received the social studies, science, and journalism awards at Southeast.
Clarissa Ann Rutherford is the daughter of Terry and Russie Rutherford of Marietta, Ga. She recently graduated from Kell High School where she received magna cum laude on the National Latin Exam and the student volunteer scholarship. She was named a Marietta Daily Journal 2013 Scholar Athlete.
