March 14, 2013 - Two publications produced by Shorter University students have earned awards in recent state and national competitions. The Argo, the student-produced yearbook of Shorter University, earned second-place honors in the Scholastic Yearbook and Magazine Awards Competition. Sponsored by the American Scholastic Press Association, the award competition rated publications produced by colleges and universities across the country based on format, content and presentation. In addition, The Periscope, Shorter’s student newspaper, received a third-place award for General Photography Excellence in the Georgia College Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest. The competition honored students for their hard work and excellence in newspaper journalism. Dr. Cassandra Johnson, chair of the Department of Communication Arts, said that the awards represent countless hours of hard work on the part of the students who staff both publications. “We are fortunate to have students who are dedicated to their publications,” she said. “They are learning skills they will actually use in their professional lives. I am so proud of them.” Dr. Sabrena Parton, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Shorter University, added, “I am thrilled with the quality of our student publications. They are led by outstanding faculty with terminal degrees in the communication field, who have combined their academic experience with more than two decades of professional media experience. Our students are learning from the best and producing work with successful results.”
