Junior Cheryl Culp receives national award from Alpha Chi Honor Society

April 14, 2011 - Shorter University junior Cheryl Culp won a national honor for her presentation at the 2011 Alpha Chi National Convention held recently in San Diego. Culp took first place in the Communication category for her presentation “A Dual Process Analysis of St. Jude’s Advertising.” For being judged as making the best presentation in the Communication category, Culp received the Brown’s Graduation Supplies Prize for Communication.

Culp, a graduate of Rome High School, is a general studies major at Shorter.

In addition, three other Shorter University students made presentations at the convention. Senior Sarah Boring, president of Shorter’s Georgia Theta chapter of Alpha Chi, presented excerpts from her senior research titled “Advertising: Where We Have Been and Where We Are Going.” Junior Jocelyn Tow competed in the Education track with her paper “Gender Differences in the Classroom.” Laura Watson, a junior, presented a photographic collection. The students were accompanied by Dr. Robert L. Turner, who was the Shorter chapter’s faculty delegate.

The convention, attended by approximately 450 persons, featured scholarly, creative, and artistic presentations by more than 270 students. The Alpha Chi representatives also took part in a national literary service project providing books to an elementary school in collaboration with Reading is Fundamental. Alpha Chi, the national college honor society, has more than 300 chapters in 45 states and the District of Columbia. Members are in the top 10 percent of juniors, seniors, and graduate students in all academic fields.
