Shorter College awards scholarships to incoming students

May 25, 2010 - Eighteen incoming Shorter College students have been awarded scholarships that will either fully or partially pay their tuition, room and board beginning with the Aug. 23 start of the college’s fall semester.

Four different scholarships types were awarded and include the Eubanks Scholarship, the Presidential Scholarship, the Provost Scholarship and the Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship.  

The Eubanks Scholarship provides tuition, room and board for eight semesters, excluding summers. To qualify for this scholarship, a student must hold at least a 3.75 grade point average and a 1300 SAT (Critical Reading & Math) or 29 ACT score. Scholarship recipients must then maintain a 3.5 cumulative grade point average at Shorter.

The Presidential Scholarship provides tuition for eight semesters, excluding summers. To qualify for this scholarship, a student must hold at least a 3.75 grade point average and a 1200 SAT (Critical Reading & Math) or 26 ACT score. Scholarship recipients must then maintain a 3.25 cumulative grade point average at Shorter.

The Provost Scholarship provides tuition for eight semesters, excluding summers. To qualify for this scholarship, a student must hold at least a 3.75 grade point average and an 1100 SAT (Critical Reading & Math) or 24 ACT score. Scholarship recipients must then maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average at Shorter.

The Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship provides tuition for eight semesters, excluding summers. To qualify for this scholarship, a transfer student must hold at least a 3.5 grade point average and have completed at least 24 semester hours. Scholarship recipients must then maintain a 3.25 cumulative grade point average at Shorter.

Garrett Baker, of Perry, was awarded the Shorter College Eubanks Scholarship recently.

Baker, a senior at The Westfield School, has been a member of the football team for four years. He is an active member of the First Baptist Church in Perry, where he sings in the choir. Baker is also a member of the Westfield School Beta Club, chorus, and literary team. He has participated in school musicals, theatrical performances and one-act plays. Additionally, Baker has participated in Georgia Governor’s Honors Program/Vocal Major, GISA All-Select Chorus, Georgia Baptist All-State Youth Choir nd placed third in his division in the National Association of Teachers of Singing vocal compeition. He volunteers as a member of his church’s audio-visual program and has assisted with vacation Bible school. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Michael Baker.

Bricey Bradshaw, of Canton, was awarded the Shorter College Presidential Scholarship.

Bradshaw, a current student at Cherokee High School, is active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, National Honor Society and was selected as homecoming queen. Bradshaw is an active member of the First Baptist Church of Canton and is a member of their youth drama team and choir. She has been active as a volunteer in the community, having amassed more than 750 hours of volunteer service.

Gloria Darlene Griffin, of Carrollton, was recently awarded the Shorter College Presidential Scholarship.

Griffin, a home school student, is active in the creative arts. She has authored a 400-page novel and has completed a series of four additional novels. Griffin is a student of ballet, hip-hop, interpretive dance, worship dance and Pointe and has performed in numerous theatrical presentations.  She is a member of the Church at Chapel Hill in Douglasville and has volunteered with the Empty Bowls fundraiser, which benefits the Carroll County Soup Kitchen.

Grace Wirabudi, of Johns Creek, was recently awarded the Shorter College Presidential Scholarship.

Wirabudi, a senior at Northview High School, is a member of the school’s Beta Club, Crosswalk Bible Study, National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, Northview Chamber Music Society and jazz orchestra. Wirabudi’s high school awards and honors include being named to the honor roll, principal’s list and Northview Legion of Scholars. She won silver and bronze at the National Spanish Exam, and won the Georgia Music Educators Association All-State Piano Duet competition. She volunteers as a greeter and small group leader at North Point Community Church.

Hannah Dudley, of Fayetteville, was recently awarded the Shorter College Presidential Scholarship.

Dudley is active in the high school marching band, National Honor Society and Beta Club. She is active in her church and leads worship time through singing and playing the flute. Dudley has over 220 volunteer service hours and has been a member of the Georgia State University Honor Band, Buckhead Youth Orchestra and the Georgia Music Educators Association All-State Band. She received an AP scholar award and has been placed on the honor roll.

Kiersten Boatwright, of Rome, was recently awarded the Shorter College Presidential Scholarship.

Boatwright, a current senior at Coosa High School, is a member of the Coosa High School Band Colorguard and Future Business Leaders of America. She has received excellence awards in math, science, history, computer science and earned a pass-plus with honors on the Georgia High School Graduation Test. Boatwright has volunteered with Floyd Medical Center and the Junior Optimist Club.

Kelsey Kirk, of Dalton, was recently awarded the Shorter College Presidential Scholarship.

Kirk, a senior at Northwest Whitfield High School, was named the Most Valuable Player of her school’s volleyball team. She was selected to Northwest Whitfield High School’s a cappella choir her sophomore, junior and senior years and was named to the state honor roll during her freshman, sophomore and junior years. Kirk is a member of the student design team, student council, National Honor Society, National Beta Club, TriM Honors Society, Future Business Leaders of America and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Lauren Shields, of Rome, was recently awarded the Shorter College Presidential Scholarship.

Shields, a senior at Model High School, is a member of the National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Health Occupational Students of America and was named as Model’s Student of the Month during her 11th grade year. She has played basketball and soccer for all four years of her high school career. Shields serves as a children’s church teacher at Sherwood Forest Baptist Church and volunteers as an assistant coach with Upward basketball. She performed with the state high school honor chorus and has taken piano lessons for 10 years. Shields also sings in the choir at Sherwood Baptist Church.

Sarah Elizabeth Justus, of Cartersville, was recently awarded the Shorter College Presidential Scholarship.

Justus, a senior at Cartersville High School, is a member of the Beta Club, Key Club and Student Council. She has participated in numerous theatrical performances and was accepted into the Governor’s Honors Program, vocal major, in the summer of 2009. Justus has been a member of the Georgia Music Educators Association’s (GMEA) All-State Chorus for five years, as well as the GMEA’s All-State Reading Chorus for two years. She is also very active in community service and has volunteered at many organizations including Cartersville First Baptist Church, Cartersville Primary School, Etowah Valley Humane Society and Relay for Life.

Robby Poole, of Dahlonega, was awarded the Shorter College Provost Scholarship.

Poole, a current student at Chestatee High School, has received the physical education award, the perfect attendance award, math award, chorus all-state award, science award and was named to the honor roll and merit roll. He is also active in Key Club, Yearbook Club, National English Honor Society and National Honor Society.  When he was seven years old, Poole underwent major heart surgery and was told by doctors that he would never be able to play sports. Nearly a decade after that prognosis, he went on to prove the doctors wrong. Poole is now a member of the Chestatee swim team and recently placed seventh in the Hall County Championships 100-meter breaststroke. He was also a member of the football team, baseball team, cheerleading team, and weight-lifting team. He is also active in volunteerism as has served with Lakewood Baptist Church, Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Relay for Life and Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Brent West, of Kingston, was awarded the Shorter College Provost Scholarship.

He is currently a senior at Cass High School and has plans to major in education. West is the son of Tim and Tina West of Kingston. He is the grandson of Horace and Betty Jackson of Taylorsville, and Raymond and Mamie West of Kingston. West has been recognized with an Outstanding Honors Government Award, the President’s Challenge Award, Outstanding American Literature Award, Outstanding Honors Chemistry Award, Outstanding Honors Government Award and the State of Georgia and University of Georgia Certificate of Merit. He is a member of the weightlifting team, National Honor Society, Beta Club, Future Business Leaders of America and serves as church musician at Kingston Holiness Church. He is also a member of the church’s drama and puppetry team. West has served as assistant coach for Cass Middle School’s basketball team and spent time volunteering for Kingston Holiness Church as an elder care worker, janitor and treasurer. He has also assisted with vacation Bible schools, Easter egg hunts and fall festivals for local children.

Hailey Hyde, of Rome, was recently awarded the Shorter College Provost Scholarship.

Hyde, a senior at Armuchee High School, is a member of the golf team, chorus, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, National Honor Society and student government. She also plays piano and has won several gold cups for her performances. Hyde has more than 580 hours of community service and has volunteered with Antioch Baptist Church, Boys Scouts of America, Glenwood Primary School and New Armuchee Baptist Church.

Macy Elaine Taylor, of Dallas, was recently awarded the Shorter College Provost Scholarship.

Taylor, a senior at Pepperell High School, is a member of the varsity golf team; a member of the National Honors Society; serves as secretary Fellowship of Christian Athletes; serves as president of Students Teaching Abstinence, Responsibility and Self-Respect; and is a member of the Key Club. Taylor has volunteered with several organizations including Relay for Life, Alzheimer’s Memory Walk, Clean-up Lindale 2009, Youth Mission Trips 2005-2010, Key Club Christmas Kids and Marine Corps Toys for Tots.

Megan Worley, of Woodstock, was awarded the Shorter College Provost Scholarship.

Worley, a senior at Sequoyah High School, is active in the Book Club, Movie Club, Math Team, advanced placement and honors classes, Dance Centre South, varsity competition cheerleading, junior varsity and varsity cheerleading, and the varsity dance team. She has received a merit/honor roll award, two varsity letters in dance and a varsity letter in competition and football cheerleading. Worley is also active in her church and community service projects. She has participated in the March of Dimes, Relay for Life, Toys for Tots and Hands on Atlanta. At church, Worley has been a leader in teaching Sunday school classes and serves as assistant choir director.

Kristen Michelle Wright, of Hazel Green, Ala., was awarded the Shorter College Provost Scholarship.

Wright is a current student at Hazel Green High School. She served as a starter for the varsity softball team for four years and spent two years as a member of the varsity cross-country team. Wright played competitive travel softball for seven years. She is active in her church youth group and Bible study and is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Spanish Club and Spirit Club. Wright was named to the high school honor roll for four consecutive years and participates in local community service projects. She has served as a group leader for vacation Bible school, as assistant coach for the Upward Soccer and Basketball programs and worked with local rescue missions to feed underprivileged families.

Will Farrer, of Silver Creek, was awarded the Shorter College Provost Scholarship.

Farrer, a senior at Pepperell High School, is a member of the National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, student council, Key Club and the junior varsity basketball team. He was also named to the academic honor roll. Farrer has volunteered his time with mission teams and traveled to Baltimore; Philadelphia; Cherokee, N.C.; and Myrtle Beach to work and minister to inner-city youth.

Tiffani Alexis Holbrook, of Cedartown, was awarded the Shorter College Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship. Holbrook, a transfer student from Georgia Highlands College, will begin classes at Shorter College in August 2010.

Holbrook is a student affiliate of Phi Theta Kappa and has served as a Sunday school teacher, a piano teacher, personal mentoring and tutoring volunteer, music minister and an outreach program participant at church. She has also spent time volunteering for various organizations distributing food, clothing and care packages to the needy.

Jessica Camille Mason, of Ft. Payne, Ala., was awarded the Shorter College Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship. Mason, a transfer student from Northeast Alabama Community College, will begin classes at Shorter College in August 2010.

Mason is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Sigma Kappa Delta, North Alabama Community College Chorus, North Alabama Community College ENCORE and North Alabama Community College Ensemble.
