Shorter College professor publishes book of cowboy poems
March 30, 2010 - Dr. David Fillingim, associate professor of philosophy at Shorter College, recently published Georgia Cowboy Poets, a book which highlights poems written by cowboys throughout Georgia.
Fillingim’s book examines how the revival of contemporary cowboy poetry that began in 1985 in Nevada has worked its way to the Peach State. In the book, he traces the history of cowboy poetry and its emergence as a cultural phenomenon as he recounts the story of how Georgia became home to a vibrant cowboy poetry scene. The majority of the book contains an anthology of poems written by cowboy poets.
Fillingim is the author of other books including Redneck Liberation: Country MusicasTheology and Extreme Virtues: Living on the Prophetic Edge. He was co-editor of More than Precious Memories: The Rhetoric of Southern Gospel Music, which won the Popular Culture Association’s 2005 Ray and Pat Browne Award for Best Edited Collection in Popular Culture Studies.
