Shorter College planning to offer additional online programs

March 5 , 2010 - Shorter College has requested approval to begin offering programs that will add to its growing number of online courses.

Pending approval, Shorter will offer an associate’s degree in science, a bachelor’s degree in business administration, and a master’s degree in accounting in the fall of 2010. All three degree offerings will be fully online, and classes will last eight weeks each.

According to Sean Butcher, director of online programs, the associate’s degree in science is ideal for students needing to complete their core curriculum classes before transitioning to a bachelor’s degree program. The Bachelor of Business Administration is tailored after the traditional BBA degree with courses in accounting, marketing, economics, information systems and management. The Master in Accounting targets those with an undergraduate degree in accounting or those looking to fulfill the Certified Public Accountant credential education requirements.

Shorter College began offering online courses in June 2009 with an array of general education courses. The addition of online courses grew from the college’s strategic plan and is an important step toward opening new avenues for individuals seeking a college education, according to Shorter College President Dr. Harold E. Newman. “We recognize that we live in a technological world and that people are turning more frequently to the Internet for educational services,” he said. “We also recognize that not everyone can go to a campus and attend classes. By utilizing an online format for the delivery of our courses, we allow that segment of the population to have the educational experiences that they need.”

The online program fits into Shorter’s continuing commitment to serving students. Building on its respected traditional programs, in 1992, Shorter College became one of the first institutions in Georgia to offer non-traditional degree programs for working adults.

Founded in 1873, Shorter College is a Christian college committed to excellence in education. Since 2003, U.S. News & World Report has ranked Shorter among the South’s best baccalaureate colleges. The college offers traditional bachelor’s degrees in 48 major areas as well as undergraduate degree programs for working adults, the Master of Business Administration and the Master of Arts in Leadership. Online courses are also available. Shorter will transition to university status June 1, 2010. For more information, visit www.shorter.edu.
