Shorter College to Present Honorary Doctorate at Saturday’s Commencement Exercises
May 7 - Philanthropist and business executive Harvey M. Gainey will receive the honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Shorter College during the school’s Spring Commencement exercises on Saturday, May 9.
Mr. Gainey has achieved noteworthy success in the transportation industry as founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Gainey Corporation, headquartered in Grand Rapids, Mich. He also maintains a strong commitment to supporting charities that benefit children, as well as Christian organizations and community events.
His honors include being named the 1997 Michigan Entrepreneur of the Year and the 2007 Business Person of the Year by the Economic Club of Grand Rapids. He is also a recipient of a 2008 “Guvvy Award,” which is Michigan’s Governors Award for Arts and Culture and is that state’s highest arts honor.
In addition, Mr. Gainey and his wife, Annie Ereveene, established the Two Moose Camp Gainey Ranch on their ranch in Montana. The camp hosts hundreds of high school and college athletes each year with a goal of “impacting young lives for the Kingdom of God.” A group of Shorter College athletes and coaches will attend a retreat at the camp this summer.
The honorary degree will be presented to Mr. Gainey during the 10 a.m. commencement ceremony at Shorter’s Winthrop-King Centre.
