Shorter College weather sirens to sound Wednesday
January 29 - Shorter College will participate in the statewide tornado drill on Wednesday, Feb. 4. The drill is expected to begin at 9 a.m. and end around 9:30 a.m., during which time Shorter’s on-campus sirens will sound and “take cover” instructions will be announced.
Shorter’s Director of Campus Safety Terry Wheeler said that after the drill is over, an all clear will be issued and students, along with faculty and staff will return to their normal activities.
In the case of inclement weather on Wednesday, a backup day of Feb. 7 has been scheduled for the drill.
Installed in June 2008, Shorter’s emergency warning system offers siren alerts as well as pre-recorded and live-voice announcement capabilities. Centrally located on the main campus of the college, the siren can be heard from several areas around Rome. Citizens are encouraged to remember that, except in the case of drills, the siren means a tornado warning has been issued for Floyd County and individuals should seek cover immediately. The custom-built emergency warning system is battery operated and will remain operational if electrical power fails.
