Top-ranked performers to take part in Shorter College’s musical cabaret this weekend
Two standout Shorter College theatre students are set to perform alongside their peers this weekend in dual productions of “The Next Best Thing to Broadway.”
Students Asha Brownie-Gordon and Doront’e Evans were recognized as the top two performers in the Georgia Theatre Conference (GTC) held last week. Brownie-Gordon and Evans were both given awards for having the highest performance scores at the conference. In addition, students from Shorter College made up 31 percent of the GTC performers who qualified for the next level of competition.
Both students will perform Friday and Saturday night, as part of the Shorter College Friends of the Theatre cabaret fundraisers.
“The Next Best Thing to Broadway” will open Friday night at Coosa Valley Technical College Conference Center in Rome. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the performance will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Friday’s performance is planned as a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This year marks the second time Shorter’s Friends of the Theatre have hosted a cabaret fundraiser for St. Jude’s. Saturday’s performance seeks to raise money for the Shorter College Theatre Department Student Scholarship Fund. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the show following at 7:30 p.m.
Selected pieces during the performance include a rendition of “Pandemonium” from the The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and “We Beseech Thee,” from Godspell.
Tickets to the event are $25 each. To purchase tickets or for more information, call the Shorter College Box Office at 706-233-7288.
