Shorter College Hosts Science Lecture
Shorter College will host Dr. Daneel Ferreira of the University of Mississippi for a science lecture at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, in Shorter College’s chorale room, which is located on the second floor of the Minor Fine Arts building. The event is sponsored by Shorter’s School of Science and Mathematics. The public is invited to attend at no charge.
Dr. Ferreira will discuss the health benefits of cranberries.
A noted scholar and professor, Dr. Ferreira serves as the pharmacognosy department chair for the University of Mississippi’s School of Pharmacy. He is also a professor in the Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences. He holds chemistry degrees from the University of the Free State (UOFS) in South Africa, where he served on the faculty from 1969 to 1999.
In 1977, he also served as a visiting lecturer at Imperial College in London, where he worked under the supervision of Nobel laureate Sir Derek Barton; during this time, Dr. Ferreira received the Diploma of Imperial College for his work on the synthesis of aminoglocoside antibiotics. He joined the University of Mississippi faculty in 1999 and worked with the Thad Cochran National Center for Natural Products Research before being named a principal scientist and pharmacognosy department chair. |

Dr. Ferreira’s discussion is part of Shorter’s Lewis Lipps Lecture Series. Established to honor Dr. Lewis Lipps, a long-time Shorter ecology faculty member, the lecture series highlights scientific issues of ecological concern.
