Shorter College Hosts Two Academic Quiz Bowls “These quiz bowls include anything within the academic realm,” said Dr. Chuck Pearson, the tournament director and Shorter’s academic quiz bowl advisor. “Competitors will face questions that require hardcore knowledge of history, science, literature, fine arts, social sciences and even pop culture.” Fourteen teams, including more than 45 students, have registered for the Nov. 3 tournament, which is primarily for smaller colleges. The day will begin with a general meeting in Shorter’s chorale room at 9:30 a.m., and games will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tournaments will take place in the basement and on the second floor of Shorter’s Sheffield-Thompson building, as well as on the first floor of Rome Hall. The Nov. 4 tournament is the Academic Competition Federation Fall Southeast Tournament or the “ACF Fall.” This is the major collegiate quiz bowl tournament in the region. Twenty-two teams, including more than 80 students, have registered from universities including the University of Georgia, the Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of Alabama, Vanderbilt University, Florida State University, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, the University of South Carolina, Berry College and Furman University. The day will begin with a general meeting in Shorter’s chorale room at 8:30 a.m., and games will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Locations for these tournaments will be the same as on Nov. 3. Shorter’s 10-member quiz bowl team will not compete in either tournament because they will be involved in running the events both days.
