Shorter College Alumni Return for Alumni/Homecoming Weekend

More than 200 alumni have registered for Shorter College’s 2007 Alumni Weekend activities that begin on Friday, Sept. 28, and continue throughout the weekend. Many additional alumni and friends of the college will also attend the Homecoming festivities planned in conjunction with the Hawks’ football game at Barron Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m. Tickets to the game may be purchased at the gate or by calling (706) 233-7288. The weekend’s activities begin with the annual alumni dinner and auction in Shorter’s Hilltop Café at 6 p.m. Award-winning reunion classes will be recognized, and all alumni will have the opportunity to support student scholarships by bidding on vacation get-away packages.

A pep rally will be held on campus Friday, Sept. 28, at 9:30 p.m. in the Cooper Courtyard. Head football coach Phil Jones will rally his team, and student organizations will compete in a spirit banner competition.

On Saturday, Sept. 29, the second annual Hawk Hustle 5K race will begin at 7:30 a.m. The run is through the scenic campus and the Shorter Heights neighborhood. Local runners are also invited to participate; prizes will be awarded to top finishers. Runners may register that morning.

Also during the morning hours will be a breakfast honoring Shorter’s graduates of 50 years or more, as well as the 14 th annual alumni baseball game. Following these annual events, alumni are encouraged to tailgate at Heritage Park, where they can gather with fellow alumni and also visit with Shorter College president, Dr. Harold E. Newman. Baptist Collegiate Ministries (formerly Baptist Student Union) will also have a reunion tent set up during the tailgating event.

At 1 p.m., alumni and fans will cheer on the Shorter Hawks football team as they take on Union. During halftime, the college will recognize the 2007 Distinguished Alumni Award winners and the 2007 Homecoming Court.

The Alumni Weekend activities will conclude with class reunion parties throughout the evening on Saturday, Sept. 29. Reunion parties are planned for the classes of 1957, 1962, 1967, 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997 and 2002.
