Shorter College Hosts Summer Arts Institute for High School Students Although most college students are now at home for the summer, the classrooms and recital halls within Shorter College’s School of the Arts will continue to resonate with the sounds of learning and artistic development, thanks to high school campers this summer. Shorter’s Summer Arts Institute, to be held June 17 to 30 on Shorter’s hilltop campus in Rome, will be a unique summer opportunity for high school students seeking to develop their musical theatre, voice, keyboard or theatre talents. Led by 13 of Shorter’s top music and theatre faculty, the two-week institute will includefive private lessons for each participant as well as classes and seminars designed to develop students’ musical knowledge, performance abilities or theatre skills. For additional information on each concentration, visit www.shorter.edu/summerarts.asp. “The Summer Arts Institute provides an opportunity for exceptional growth and a foundation for students to learn how to pursue their dreams,” said Dr. Brian Nedvin, one of the institute’s organizers. “It is also an opportunity to be immersed in the arts and to be surrounded by students and faculty whose love for the arts is unparalleled.” Participants must register for the Summer Arts Institute by June 4. Tuition is $1,000 for the full two-week experience, which includes room, board and lessons. (A one-week course is available for keyboard students only; the cost per week is $475.) Additionally, a limited number of scholarships are available; to apply for a scholarship, submit a tape recording of two contrasting pieces by May 21. For additional information, contact Dr. Brian Nedvin at (706) 233-7246 or bnedvin@shorter.edu.
