Shorter College professor featured in Saturday book signing
A book signing, to be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, will feature Shorter College professor Dr. Carmen Acevedo Butcher. The college’s scholar in residence and an associate professor of English, Butcher will sign copies of “ Hildegard of Bingen: A Spiritual Reader ,” recently released by Paraclete Press.
The book contains selections from songs, theological texts, liturgical music and letters by the 12th-century German mystic Hildegard of Bingen, which Dr. Butcher translated from Ancient Latin into Modern English. Combined with an introduction to Hildegard’s life and era, a map of Hildegard’s Germany and a chronology of her life, the book captures Hildegard’s vibrant spirit and intelligence.
“Hildegard was a Benedictine abbess, artist, composer, dietician, naturalist, poet, traveling preacher, mystic and political consultant,” explained Dr. Butcher. “She was a self-doubter with acute certainty in a merciful and mysterious God; a gifted healer who suffered from illness her whole life. Nourishing, challenging and idea-bursting, her writings will stir and awaken your soul.” |
