Shorter College theatre receives prestigious invitation

For the fourth time in five years, Shorter College’s theatre department has been invited to perform at the American College Theatre Festival for Region IV. Shorter’s production of “Into the Woods,” directed by Tim Bohn with musical direction by Rick Gomez, will be performed on Friday, Feb. 9, at 8:30 p.m., in Americus, Ga.

This event is the only competitive theatre festival in the country for college and university productions. Established to share and honor the exemplary work of college actors, directors and playwrights, the festival also highlights the best work of college theatre programs around the nation. Shorter will once again be one of only six schools invited to represent the entire southern United States. They will compete against large and prestigious theatre programs such as the University of Central Florida, the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Birmingham-Southern College. The winners of the regional festivals have the opportunity to perform at the Kennedy Center in April.

Shorter College also boasts 10 students individually competing in the Irene Ryan Acting Competition. From 300 preliminary qualifiers, Shorter students in previous years have made it to the semi-final and 16-student final round. Several students also have been nominated in the design competition in areas such as costume design, lighting design, dramaturgy, make up design and stage management.

Shorter received its first invitation to perform in the festival in 2003 for their production of Jekyll and Hyde: The Musical. The college’s active participation in the festival competitions began in 2002.
