SPRING 2008
Shorter Chorale to perform at Vatican
While touring Italy in May 2008, the Shorter Chorale will make institutional history. The choral ensemble, under the direction of Shorter alumna Dr. Martha Shaw (’80), will perform at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. They will sing Mass at the historic basilica, where the Pope often presides.
“This opportunity is the most prestigious invitation the Chorale has ever received,” according to Dr. Alan Wingard, dean of the School of the Arts.
In addition, the 10-day tour will feature performances in select venues in Rome, Florence and Venice, including St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice.
Founded in 1968, the Shorter Chorale is widely recognized as one of the finest collegiate choral ensembles in the Southeastern United States. Funds for the 2008 spring tour were raised through the sale of the Chorale’s first nationally released CD, A Savior from on High, which debuted in the fall.
The Chorale’s most recent international tour included performances in the cathedrals and churches of England.
