Social Security/Medicare. Social Security provides:

< Survivors' benefits to your spouse and qualified dependent children in the event of your death. Shorter College is obligated by law to contribute 7.65% of wages to the mandated maximum on all salaries earned at Shorter College which is a part of the employees regular salary.

Employees are covered by a Worker's Compensation Insurance policy which pays medical expenses and loss wages due to an injury incurred on-the-job, according to state regulations. Paid by the college

Shorter College matches any contribution up to five percent of your salary the first year of employment to any of the participating retirement programs. Retirement plan is with TIAA/CREF or Guidestone.  Paid by the employee

after one year of employment After one year's employment, Shorter College provides a base two percent employment contribution, plus matching any percentage up to five percent, which will equal a maximum total of seven percent. Paid by the college

Medical insurance is provided for all full-time employees. The policy is through Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Georgia with a choice between two types of HMO: the HMO has only in-network benefits and the POS has an out-of-network benefit. Paid by the employee and supplemented by the college

Additional coverage for family members is available. Monthly rates can be obtained from the Office of Human Resources.

A Directory of Preferred Providers is available online from Blue Cross at www.bcbsga.com or call 1-800-441-2273 to check on any Provider you plan to see. The insurance goes into effect the date of employment and ends the date of termination.

Blue Cross administers our health insurance COBRA.  Upon termination, Blue Cross will send employee and dependents COBRA information.

LIFE INSURANCE first day of employment A $10,000 ($5000 at age 70) life insurance policy is provided each full-time employee who is on our health insurance. An additional life insurance policy is provided which is equal to three times the annual salary, not to exceed $350,000. These benefits are provided at no cost to the employee. Paid by the college
LONG-TERM DISABILITY first day of employment Employees are covered by long-term disability insurance which begins 90 days after total disability.  For information regarding short-term disability, see Other Insurance below. Paid by the college
DENTAL INSURANCE 1st of month following first full month of employment An employee may purchase dental insurance through payroll deduction. Rates are available in the Human Resources Office. Renewal date is Jan. 1. To add dental coverage later, application form must be submitted by Dec. 1. Paid by the employee
OTHER INSURANCE per policy date Cancer, short-term disability, long-term care, accident, hospital income, and universal life policies are available through payroll deduction. Paid by the employee
FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS 1st day of 1st full month of employment To tax-exempt accounts and premiums. Two pre-tax accounts available are medical and dependent care reimbursement. Paid by the employee
NORTHWEST GEORGIA CREDIT UNION first day of employment Employees are eligible for membership which provides checking, savings and loan account payments through direct deposit. Membership must be set up at NWGCU.
DIRECT DEPOSIT OF PAYROLL CHECK second pay period Pay may be direct deposited in a checking account at any qualified bank or credit union. It takes at least one pay period to set up the direct deposit, so the first check after applying may be a real check.
HOLIDAYS first day of employment ex. Christmas & Thanksgiving Official college holidays are listed in the handbooks.  To be paid for Christmas and Thanksgiving holidays new employees must be on the job a minimum of 30 days Paid by the college
VACATION LEAVE eligibility based on service (staff only) Accrues at 6 hrs per each full month worked prior to May 31, amount to be taken during first full fiscal year. Beginning second full fiscal year 80 hrs each year through fifth year. Eight hours is added beginning the 6th year and each year through 10th year for a maximum of 3 weeks or 120 hrs vacation after 10 years. Must be taken within the fiscal year. Paid by the college
SICK LEAVE end of first full month of employment (staff only) Accrues at 8 hrs per each full month worked to a maximum of 720 hrs. Of the sick leave accrued, 32 hours in each fiscal year may be taken as personal leave for such purposes as doctor, dentist, eye, etc., as needed. Personal leave does not carry over from year to year. Paid by the college

TUITION REMISSION

after 1 full year employment Covers employee, spouse and dependent children. Conditional MBA remission. (See Handbook for details.) Granted by college

Prior to, but no later than the date of hire, a new employee must schedule an entrance interview with the Director of Human Resources. All benefits are reviewed and the necessary paperwork for enrollment in benefits is supplied. A copy of the Staff or Faculty Handbook is issued, as applicable. All staff employees are hired for a 90 work day provisional period during which time they can be laid off or discharged with no payment for accrued benefits.
