Shorter Chorale in Spain in 1989
    VIRTUALLY SHORTER

Welcome to the June 2011 Virtually Shorter!

History does repeat itself! Check out these photos of the Shorter Chorale taken in Spain, circa 1989.  The Chorale toured Spain to participate in its Festival of Sacred Music. Our 2010-2011 Chorale just returned from their tour of Spain. While there, the Chorale performed in many places, including the Colegiata Church (in which Chorale had the distinction of being the first United States choir to perform), the Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos, the Santa Maria Cathedral in Medina de Rioseco, the Toledo Cathedral and the Basilica de Pilar.

Summer missions

Shorter University students are traveling the world this summer, spreading the love of Christ while serving in several mission fields. A group of our School of Nursing students are in Bulgaria, working with orphaned children in a pediatric hospital. In a recent email, nursing faculty member Pamela Dunagan, said “The students have had their hearts broken and have been experiencing the love of Christ through their ability to give their love to these babies and children.” Shorter also has several students who are performing mission work in other parts of the world, some as far away as Africa. One sophomore at Shorter who is serving in Africa has been posting updates on his Facebook page. One of his most recent postings states: “What a day: 21 professions of faith, just from my team of three, mostly Muslims. Prayed over many people, started a couple new house churches.”

Shorter is so proud of these bold young men and women who are stepping out on faith, allowing God to work through them to achieve wonderful things for His glory. Please keep our students, staff and faculty who are serving in both the United States and abroad in your prayers this summer as they testify the gospel of the grace of God.

Did you know?

Melonie Hardy Did you know that Shorter student Melonie Hardy is spending her summer at the University of Maryland participating in their prestigious Biosystems Internship for Engineers program? And if that’s not impressive enough, Melonie had to turn down another exciting internship offer from NASA in order to attend the program at Maryland. Melonie is currently a senior and is double majoring in mathematics and computer information systems.

SU News

Shorter University welcomed Dr. Donald Dowless as the university’s 19th president on June 1. Dr. Dowless was the unanimous recommendation of the Presidential Search Committee, which had worked to find a successor to Dr. Harold E. Newman, who led the institution from January 2005 to May 31, 2011. Dr. Dowless came to Shorter from North Greenville University, where he had served as vice president for academics since June 2006.

You can read more about Dr. Dowless by checking out the latest issue of the Shorter University Magazine. The magazine mailed last month, but if you missed it, be sure to read it online here.

We welcomed the Class of 1961 back to Shorter to celebrate its 50th class reunion. The classes of 1956, 1951, 1946 and 1941 also joined our annual Heritage on the Hill event. Check out our multimedia presentation of the event.

Chalk up another national championship for the Hawks! Powered by four individual national championships and a host of record-setting performances, Shorter captured the NAIA Men's Outdoor Track and Field national championship at a meet held May 29. In basketball news, Shorter’s junior point guard for the Lady Hawks, Kelly Ellison, was also given a national honor as she received the NAIA’s Emil S. Liston Award. This award is given annually by the NAIA and Daktronics and recognizes one male and one female basketball player based on scholarship, character and playing ability.
