Did you Know?
Did you know that Shorter University theatre majors have been selected as the best in the Southeast in the Kennedy Center Musical Theatre Award division for two years running? Jennifer Holcombe, a senior musical theatre major at Shorter, won top honors at the Kennedy Center Musical Theatre Awards competition for performing the most impressive musical theatre scene at the competition. Holcombe’s 2011 win follows Jonathan Altman’s (’10) win last year. Both earned the right to represent the Southeast – and Shorter – when competing for the Kennedy Center’s prestigious Irene Ryan Award.
SU News
The Shorter University Board of Trustees announced Feb. 10 that Dr. Donald V. Dowless has been elected to serve as Shorter’s 19th president effective June 1, 2011.
He will succeed Dr. Harold E. Newman, who in June of last year announced his plans to retire from the presidency. Dr. Dowless, who is currently serving as vice president for academic affairs at North Greenville University, visited the Shorter campus to meet with students, faculty and staff. A media conference was also held to introduce Dr. Dowless to the community.
“Dr. Donald Dowless has strong credentials in the areas of Christian commitment, higher education administration, fundraising, and ministry,” said Shorter University Trustee Chairman Dr. Nelson Price. “The integration of faith and learning is the foundation of his accomplishments as he has risen through the academic ranks. He knows academia inside and out, and what is most impressive about Dr. Dowless is his love for the Lord and his desire to honor Him with all his heart, soul, and mind. His passion for seeing students grow strong in the Christian faith and for knowing their academic disciplines is evident. We are grateful for the progress Shorter University has made under Dr. Newman’s leadership, and we are sure to keep the momentum of success under our new leader, Dr. Donald Dowless.”

We will end this month’s newsletter on a sweet note, literally speaking. Shorter University senior and vocal performance major Jasmine Habersham recently won the Southern Division of the Music Teacher’s National Association Young Artist Competition. She was the sole winner selected from an eight-state region and will now go on to compete as one of the seven national finalists in the MTNA National Young Artist Competition in Milwaukee.
