Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

The Shorter University family wishes you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful 2012! This Christmas season, amid all the hustle and bustle, Christmas parties and family gatherings, take time to remember the words of the angels in Luke 2:14: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!

Did you know?

Did you know that 541 students received their Shorter University diplomas over the weekend during our three December commencement ceremonies? As another interesting note, Shorter President Dr. Don Dowless hand-signed all 541 diplomas. And, if any proud friends or relatives out there missed seeing their special someone walk across the stage, no worries! You can view footage from the ceremonies at www.Shorter.edu/SUTV.

SU News

Thanks to the Georgia Baptist Convention, Shorter University will receive $7.2 million dollars that can be used for university-recommended projects. The additional funds come after the GBC acted to simplify and clarify the convention’s budget. The convention voted to do away with its Capital Improvements Endowment Program (CIEP), which had previously allowed institutions to apply for CIEP funds. Under the new structure, the $7.2 million endowment that was earmarked for Shorter has been transferred from the convention to the Shorter University Board of Trustees.

Our outstanding fine arts students continue to claim impressive awards. The latest of many is Shorter University junior vocal performance major Trey Smagur, who walked away with an impressive win at the Georgia chapter of the Music Teachers National Association voice competition. Smagur, a resident of Clarkesville, Ga., presented a 25-minute program and competed against singers from all over the state of Georgia, including graduate-level students. He will now compete at the district level.

Stepping off the performance stage onto the court, we are proud to announce that our men’s and women’s basketball teams have shot to the top of the rankings chart. The NAIA released its first regular season edition of the Men's and Women's Division I Basketball Coaches Top 25 Polls recently and Shorter is well represented in both. The Hawks, off to a 9-0 start, appear at No. 5 in the country while the Lady Hawks, 8-1 on the year, are ranked 18th.

We’re also excited to announce that legendary Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox will be the featured speaker at this year’s Shorter University baseball program’s
“Meet the Team Dinner.” Scheduled for Jan. 7 at 7 p.m., the event will be held at Darlington School’s Huffman Center.

In other campus news, Shorter is once again teaming up with the local community and a long list of sponsors to help host the Russell Athletic-NAIA Football National Championship game on Saturday, Dec. 17. This year’s game will pair Carroll College of Montana and St. Xavier of Illinois together on the gridiron for an action-filled day of football. Kickoff is at 4:30 p.m. For more information, visit .www.NAIAnationalchampionship.com.
