Welcome to the August 2011 Virtually Shorter!

It’s official: Shorter’s application for admission into the NCAA Division II membership process has been accepted! President Dr. Don Dowless delivered the exciting news during a recent press conference to a room nearly overflowing with faculty, staff, students, members of the Rome community and media. In the photo above, Dr. Dowless (center), along with Dr. Nelson Price, chairman of the board of trustees (left), and Shorter Athletic Director Bill Peterson (right), are shown proudly holding commemorative T-shirts printed for the special announcement.

Meet Jamie Clements!

There’s a new face in the alumni office and a new ambition to go along with it.

Jamie Clements, a 2005 graduate of Shorter, has been named associate director of alumni. His goal is to work with younger alums to make sure they stay in the loop about what’s happening on the Hill. Jamie joins Director of Alumni Mark Tunnell (’90), who joined the staff in September of last year.

“I am excited about my job here at Shorter,” Jamie said. “I can’t wait to get our alums connected and build a relationship with them. We want to make sure they know about the great things we have going at Shorter.” Jamie also brings fresh ideas about social media and digital technology to the alumni office. “We have really amazing things planned that will reach out to our younger alumni and older ones alike. The key here is help alumni see that while there have been so many great changes to Shorter, we are still the old Shorter they know and love.”

Mark explains that Jamie will also get current students involved before graduating so that critical connection can be made.  “We want to have engaged and excited alumni of all ages, and it’s all about building connections. The addition of Jamie to our office is going to help us develop those lasting connections with our alumni.”

Did you know?

Did you know that the Shorter Chorale has been invited to sing at the 2012 Southern Division American Choral Directors Association Conference? It’s a very prestigious invitation, and the Chorale was just one of 18 ensembles selected to perform out of a pool of more than 100. Their acceptance was based on several years’ worth of recordings and, as director Martha Shaw (’80) puts it, “shows a pattern of consistently excellent performance.” This will mark the first time that the Shorter Chorale has been asked to perform at the regional ACDA conference.
