Alumni Newsletter

Mark TunnellSeptember 2010 - We are excited to announce that Mark Tunnell (’90) will now serve as Shorter’s director of alumni services. Mark, who is married to the former Kim Hill (’91), is excited to return to the Hill. He worked previously in admissions before moving on to pharmaceutical sales and the printing industry. Already an active volunteer with Shorter's alumni association, Tunnell has also served as a member of Shorter's Alumni Governing Board. So, when you make your next visit to Shorter, make sure you stop into the alumni office and say hello.

Chip Mitchell, our former alumni director, has accepted another position at Shorter. He will now serve as development officer.

DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that our upcoming Homecoming alumni baseball game has been taking place since 1994? It was started when then head baseball Coach Ricci Lattanzi came up with the idea to host a game featuring Shorter baseball alumni. The idea was well received and has turned into a tradition that’s been going on for 17 years. Today, it is one of our most popular homecoming activities. We’re hoping to build this fun tradition with the addition of a women’s alumnae basketball game. Both games will take place on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 10 a.m. We hope to see you there – either on the diamond and on the court!

SU NEWS

We hope to see you on the Hill for our Oct. 2 Homecoming! It’s just a few days away, so be sure to mark your calendar. You should have already received a special homecoming announcement from us in the mail.

Nursing students in the sim labEven though we are excited about our upcoming homecoming celebration, there have been plenty of other campus happenings that we are excited about as well.  Take our nursing program for example. It’s just a month into the school year, and already our first class of nursing students has taken part in the first-ever acute clinical day at Floyd Medical Center. While there, they received positive feedback and glowing reviews from the nurses and staff at the hospital.

Our business school also held its official ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, Sept. 10. Shorter University leaders were joined Friday by Rome businessman Robert H. Ledbetter, the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce and members of the local business community for the ribbon cutting ceremonies at the new Robert H. Ledbetter College of Business facility in the Midtown Crossing Shopping Center.

Just a few days after the ribbon cutting, the Ledbetter College of Business also announced an exciting change to its annual Hopkins Institute for Business Ethics. The Hopkins Institute for Business Ethics is an annual lectureship established in the fall of 2008 thanks to a generous gift from Shorter University Trustee Col. Harvard Hopkins and his wife. Instead of just one lecture – as has been the schedule in previous years – this year the institute will feature a series of speakers during the academic year. We feel that as a Christian university it’s our responsibility to promote the importance of ethics in the business world, and the Hopkins Institute is just one way that we honor that responsibility.

Shorter also helped our students slow down and concentrate on their relationship with God by hosting Christian Focus Week during the second week in September. While we agree that Christ should be the center of our lives every week, statistics show that the average Christian college student spends 35 hours per week on social media networks and only about 5 to 10 minutes per day praying and reading the Bible. Christian Focus Week brought special speakers to campus and provided students with opportunities during the week to pray with fellow classmates.

This coming Saturday, September 25, Hawks football will take on Georgetown (Ky.) at 1:30 p.m. at Barron Stadium. Can't make it to the game? You can watch the game live online at www.shorter.edu/SUTV. This is a new feature we hope to continue and improve upon this year.
