cornucopiaGIVING THANKS

We would like to say “Thank You!” to all of you who responded to our “What are you thankful for at Shorter?” question. We had several great responses, and we’d like to share a few of them with you!

“I am thankful our granddaughter, Becca Newell, is a freshman at Shorter and is enjoying her year there!!”
– Lee Blair Newell

“Thankful for the friendships that have lasted these many years and the beautiful Ep Sig Sister and AGO Sweetheart that I married - Cheri Anderson.”
– Pastor Jeff Overton

“There are several things I am thankful for about Shorter. First and foremost, I am thankful for Shorter’s continued recognized quality and academic reputation across many disciplines. I am glad transition to university status went very well and was well received all the while maintaining the same small college feel and one-on-one environment and open door policy so many professors there have. I am glad that the problems and controversy with the GBC is long over and the relationship is very strong again. I am thankful for Shorter finally having a football team and one that is doing well and has been accepted and supported by everyone. Finally, I am thankful for the university showing such a strong commitment to its mission to not only educated but strengthen every student’s spiritual side so that they may grow closer and stronger in Christ, and instilling in each student a desire to learn and to continue learning throughout their lives.”
– Deric Shaw

“I am most thankful that the pretty blonde that came to BSU (Donna Reynolds Wright) married me. I also am thankful that the Lord used experiences at Shorter to confirm a lifelong call to missions and ministry.”
- C. Thomas Wright

DID YOU KNOW?

As we officially break ground for our library expansion on Dec. 3, it might interest you to know that Livingston Library is always adding on. Though not a physical expansion, the library on the Hill is constantly growing online. Right now, the library has 57,000 online E-books, 400 online reference books, more than 35,000 online audio CDs and offers student access to 8,000 streaming films. Students can access these materials from anywhere at any time.

SU NEWS

At Shorter, we are most thankful for the many blessings God has given our university. We consider you, and the thousands of other wonderful alumni who are part of the Shorter family, one of the biggest blessings that make up our institution’s history.

We were also blessed immensely with long-awaited news that we will officially break ground on our library expansion Dec. 3. The expansion will include the addition of a new library wing. The project will create an additional 18,000 square feet of library space that features expanded space for library holdings, study group meeting rooms, a study café, a special collections room for archival materials, enlarged research centers for music, art, business, Christian studies, language and literature. The plan also calls for the addition of a two-story cathedral atrium for study and special events.

Our current students are a blessing to our institution, and they continue to bless others through Christian service projects. Our Greek Life organization recently collected dozens of bags filled with gently used clothing items for the campus-wide Youth for Christ Clothing (YFC) Drive. The items were donated by students, faculty and staff and were given to Rome’s Youth for Christ organization. There, the clothing will be added to the YFC clothes closet for distribution to local children in need. Alto Park Elementary School in Rome has also been recently blessed by Shorter students serving as tutors and mentors. The Council for Christian Colleges and Universities featured the students’ service in an article that can be found here - Serving in Rural Communities.

Shorter as a whole continues to be blessed with the addition of several new programs of study as well as new athletic programs. Our School of Nursing students will soon begin their second semester of studies as will students enrolled in our new online programs. Wrestling and lacrosse are two new sports that have been added recently. Our wrestling program made its debut on the mat just a few days ago and brought home a 35-12 win against West Virginia Tech. Additionally, our men’s lacrosse team will start competition this spring.

As we stop and reflect on all of our blessings during this season of gratitude, we encourage you to do the same, and from our family to yours: Happy Thanksgiving!
