Shorter’s Phil Jones honored with prestigious FCA Coach of the Year award

Phil Jones’ devotion to his faith and dedication to the game of football was recognized on Jan. 13, as Jones received the esteemed 2008 Fellowship of Christian Athletes Grant Teaff Coach of the Year honor.

With this award on his shelf, Jones now joins with the ranks of past recipients like Sylevester Croom (Mississippi State - 2007), Tommy Bowden (Clemson - 2006), and Tommy Tuberville (Auburn - 2005).

Jones began his fourth season with the Hawks this year, after beginning the program in the inaugural 2005 season. After coaching the team to 7-4 records the previous two seasons, he excelled in the NAIA this year with nine wins and only three losses, one of which was to NCAA Div. I-FCS Western Carolina. Additionally, he led Shorter to their first-ever postseason appearance in November against the University of the Cumberlands.

2008 NAIA game a gridiron success

It drenched the field and the City of Rome, but the rain that fell Dec. 20 during the Russell Athletic-NAIA championship football game didn’t dampen the spirits of the fans in the stands.

More than 6,000 people packed Rome’s Barron Stadium to see the highly anticipated matchup between the Sioux Falls Saints of South Dakota and the Carroll Cougars of Montana.

Ryan (11) and Kyle (7) Timberlake

Timberlake brothers bring African soccer to America

There were no lush, green soccer fields on which to learn. For two young Americans, the dirt and sand of Africa served as their training ground growing up - and Ryan and Kyle Timberlake wouldn't have had it any other way. It was normal for the brothers who count the blessings they've had as sons of missionaries and who have infused faith and family on another continent.

They also know that they have just as much a home at Shorter College, where they have made soccer a family affair and stand as a clear example of just how far the Hawks' program has come over the past few years.

2009 Men’s and Women’s track preview: Quicker than ever

The quicker, the better. That's the approach the Shorter men's and women's track and field teams will be taking this season in the program's brief three-year history. For the men, there's little doubt that the Hawks enter a new year having taken the NAIA by storm as they posted a 10th place finish at last season's NAIA National Outdoor Championships. For the women, experience and newcomers gives the Lady Hawks bright hopes for an even better season, with senior K'Ianca Dupree leading the way.
