Congrats, grads!

The Shorter alumni body has grown once again. On Saturday, May 3, approximately 400 graduates received their diplomas in the Winthrop-King Centre on Shorter’s Rome campus.

The memorable day included encouraging words from the commencement speaker, beloved professor and Shorter alumna, Dr. Carmen Acevedo Butcher (’82). The associate professor of English and scholar in residence addressed the audience with a speech that highlighted the Class of 2008 – who they are, what they do, and what they learned at Shorter, as well as how their relationships with faculty and staff changed their lives.

NAIA National Championship countdown continues

Although it’s hard to believe, Dec. 20 will be here before we know it. Therefore, progress continues towards Shorter College and Rome-Floyd County hosting the 2008 NAIA National Football Championship game.

The Executive Committee for the 2008/2009 NAIA National Football Championship Games announced earlier this month that progress is continuing on the renovation and improvements of Barron Stadium.

Barron Stadium stands with a coat of new green paint

The visitor side stands received a fresh coat of paint last week, with the home grandstand receiving work over the next few days. The painting of the whole facility should be completed by the beginning of June, including the concession and restroom areas.

The natural Bermuda turf that was planted several weeks ago has already begun to take root and adds to the stadium’s visual makeover. Additionally, the press box is currently being renovated to include increased media seating, and expanded radio and television space.

According to Shorter College Athletic Director and Executive Committee co-chair Bill Peterson, it is anticipated that the entire renovation will be complete by the time the NAIA makes it official site visit in July.

Also earlier this month, the Executive Committee appointed Dawn Tolbert, Shorter’s director of institutional relations, as chair of the Public Relations and Marketing subcommittee.
